Cooking dishes that are traditionally popular in street food markets is a great way to spice up your cooking routine. I cannot tell you how often I get lost in the art of street food. One quick search on the Philippines and you are sure to discover this traditional Filipino snack/dessert.
What is a Turon?
A turon is the traditional sweet egg roll snack stuffed with banana, fresh jackfruit, and fried in brown sugar oil. I have made these with and without jackfruit, but if you can get your hands on some then I highly recommend it. Plus, that is the way the locals make it. The fruit is rolled in an egg roll wrapper and then fried in oil and brown sugar until caramelized. These also go great with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or coconut whipped cream.
How to Use Jackfruit
Maybe I’m naive, but up until I made this recipe, I always thought jackfruit was just the stringy portion you buy in the can. I found myself at the asian supermarket starring at the VERY large intimidating fruit and decided that for $3.00 I was going to buy it and learn how to cut it. Yes, I’m aware this sounds ridiculous that I was intimidated by the jackfruit- but have you seen a jackfruit? Basically if you peel away the stringy portion, there are tiny orange fruit balls inside the jackfruit. It is absolutely amazing and tastes like a better version of a mango! I highly recommend not skipping the jackfruit in turons, the whole experience of trying and buying new foods is just fun.
I have an agreement with myself. There is always room for dessert. No if ands or buts about it… if you are with me then dessert is just part of the deal.
